The first 'green' train in the country will be introduced in North Bengal, the railway minister said while announcing five new express trains for the region. "A green train would run through the pristine forest of North Bengal", Minister Dinesh Trivedi, who subsequently resigned, said in his railway budget speech, but did not provide any details on the route or frequency. The authorities of the Northeast frontiers Railway that is in charge of tacks passing through "pristine forest"- the Siliguri to Alipurduar junction route, which is flanked by three wild life sanctuaries, a tiger reserve, and fringes of a national park- said they were clueless about what a green train was. Trivedi however, said a green train would have bio toilets and would be pulled by a diesel engine which emits less smoke. "In bio toilets, the waste is not discharged on tracks but stored for disposal later". Introduction of the green train is definitely a unique announcement for North Bengal, but very little spoken on it. Nil expect the railway minister to consider the prospects of tourisms in the forest stretches of North Bengal and run trains accordingly. The trains must be able to ferry visitors to forests destinations on both sides of the Dooar's rail track on the Siliguri Junction- Alipurduar route," said Samrat Sanyal, president of the Eastern Himalayas and Tour Operator's association.

Electric cars in US is saving money on fuels and also less polluting

Electric vehicles in the US save money on fuel and are less polluting than most gasoline- powered vehicles, even in places where electricity is made by burning coal, the Union of Concerned Scientist said in a report. "Drivers should feel confident that owning an electric vehicle is a good choice for reducing global warming pollution, cutting fuel costs, and slashing oil consumption," said Don Anair, a senior engineer on UCS's clean vehicles program. UCS said the study is the first to analyze emissions from vehicles charged on a power grid of electricity made from fuels, such as coal and natural gas. According to the report, written by Anair, owners of electric vehicles can save $750-$1200 a year based on 11,000 miles of driving, compared to drivers of a gasoline powered vehicle that gets 27 miles per gallon at $3.50 per gallon. For every 50 cents rise in the price of a gallon of gasoline, an EV driver can save an extra $200 annually, the report said.
